Wrapping Unwrapping. UK/France 2004 Video. 2min 30sec.
A man is covering and uncovering his head. To start with, he presents a bundle of textile strips as gesture of offering; he would like us to participate and to engage in his metaphoric suicide. It is a means of drawing attention to his plight and represents his desire to disappear from reality.
However, when he has finished wrapping himself, his impulse is to breath again. He wishes to continue the journey he feels optimistic. This short piece is a variation on the “Myth of Sisyphus”.
Synopsis for 3 Portraits of Cath Diaz
This short video is shown in 3 stages. Recorded on Mini DV of 1.30min for each portrait
1.It is a still portrait. To me it reminds me of Egyptian face; stoic altogether powerful and fragile. I wanted that we take the time to look to the features of the face and Cath ornaments but also to discover the inner self of the model. Between the child and the process to become a woman.
2. Now, we see Cath Diaz looking around herself and recording visually what is happening around her. She has become a person we are looking at. It has the effect of being seen and seeing at the same time. Her seeing is as much as recording which effect she has around her. I wanted to film different phases of sentiments and mood.
3. Now the person, Cath is seen listening to her own music through a walkman. No sound reaches us. We can only gather the type of music, the tempo and the context. It becomes a very sensuous encounter between the music, the rhythm and herself. She is so involved that nothing and no one else is part of her world. It is fascinating. It becomes a prayer, being under a magical spell.
Hand Ballet. UK/France 2004 Video 4mn.
This work depicts a series of hand gestures evoking emotions such as tension, aggression and tenderness, while at the same time illustrating the saying – I wash my hands of it – to refute the responsibility or confrontation, like Pilate and Jesus, or like Rimbaud washing his hands of his career in poetry and of Paris choosing instead to leave, disappear in search of peace and repose elsewhere. “Real life is absent” or “ I is someone else”
